The 11th of April was an exciting day for many Dubai Scholars students, as we were graced with the presence of one of the wisest and brightest Islamic scholars in the world, Ismail Bin Musa Menk, also known as Mufti Menk. Mufti Menk is a Muslim cleric and grand mufti of Zimbabwe.
His first shower of knowledge was based on diversity. He spoke of respecting people from different nationalities, saying ‘‘God has made with us a lot of other creations, some same from different places, and we can understand that, then we can respect". He went on by stating that if we cannot comprehend this, we will fail. We must strive for progress and improvement; we must aim for development of our character. He addressed us with a statement informing us what he had come for. He said ‘‘I am here today to tell you we have a duty: to develop our character and conduct.’’
His session took a turn to the topic of selfishness. It corrupts our minds, we start to desire more but our greed gets us nowhere, while our opponent moves forward. If we rid ourselves of such a quality, if we are kind to our friends, family and society, we will grow.
He moved forward to his next concept of morals. ‘‘If you are extremely good-looking, there are people who are better-looking and humble. If you are smart, there are people smarter then you who are humble. There is no point in being good-looking and smart if you are not humble, as others may not enjoy your looks or knowledge if you are arrogant and boastful’’. He continued by talking about eradication of foul language and maintenance of courteous behaviour.

He concluded his talk by telling us once again that we must target progress in our character and conduct. His teachings to us were on keeping scope for improvement and progress. He presented the school with a gift of one of his books, including over five hundred of his most liked quotes. Mr. Frank and Mrs. Farhana took to the stage to say a few words of tribute and gratitude to Mr. Menk and presented him with a gift of flowers.
The event was planned on very short notice but everyone was extremely happy. It turned out to be one of the most enjoyable sessions of Dubai Scholars. |
